Gold Coast dances onto the Bollywood movie scene

Thursday, March 06, 2014

The Gold Coast’s Famous for Fun holiday experiences will star in one of the most-anticipated Bollywood films of the year which premieres in India today.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the movie produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Pritish Nandy Communications would create international exposure for the Gold Coast.
The Side Effects of Marriage features characters ‘Sid’ and ‘Trisha’ in a Bollywood dance sequence on Surfers Paradise beach, cuddling koalas at Dreamworld, driving a Cadillac in the hinterland and taking a romantic Hot Air Balloon ride, portrayed by the famous Bollywood stars, Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan.
“The film’s endorsement of the Gold Coast as a premier holiday destination provides a fantastic opportunity to promote it to the Indian market,” Ms Stuckey said.
“India is an important visitor market for Queensland with 37,000 Indians visiting the state in the year to September 2013 and spending $69 million on their trips, rises of 22 per cent and 16 per cent respectively."
Ms Stuckey said Tourism and Events Queensland had partnered with Tourism Australia to capitalise on the film’s influence, producing a campaign to inspire Indian viewers to holiday on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
“A series of print and television advertisements will put the Gold Coast front of mind as the ideal holiday destination in the lead up to the Indian summer booking period of April to June,” Ms Stuckey said.
“These campaigns will help grow the Indian market, assisting our industry towards the target of growing overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by the year 2020.”
Tourism Australia Acting Managing Director, Frances-Anne Keeler said India presents enormous tourism potential and a market to actively tap into through high profile marketing activities such as this film.
“Featuring in Hindi movies is a great way of reaching out to a wide audience base and the romantic storyline of this particular film provides the perfect opportunity to showcase Australia as an ideal holiday destination for our key target segment.”

Kokoda Grunt

Q: So what is a "Grunt"?

A: Grunt is a term used for an infantry soldier, one worn with pride.

And so the Kokoda Grunt is the "foot soldier" of the Kokoda Challenge - Australia's premier endurance event. Kokoda Challenge now takes Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice one step further - sideways, to bring you a new, extreme challenge in the form of the Kokoda Grunt.

The inaugural Kokoda Grunt was a great success and will be repeated in 2014! They are excited to be planning their new obstacles and improved course! And look out for their new Grommet Grunt Obstacle Course for the younger enthusiasts.

From courses of five kilometres for the newly recruited adventurers, to the grueling 10 kilometres for the more seasoned competitors, they will have you sweating, laughing, crying and begging for more. Bring your friends and family to cheer you on.

Live at Bond - Nicky Bomba's Bustamento

Bond University and Bleach* Festival present Nicky Bomba's Bustamento in their first ever Gold Coast performance ... and it's free!

Nicky Bomba is one of Australia's most popular and respected musicians. His band Bustamento is a tropical shaking six piece that pays homage to the upbeat rhythms of the Caribbean - calypso, mento (Jamaican folk), reggae and ska.

Bustamento's amazing chemistry comes from the band having played together for more than 15 years, including in Nicky Bomba's twice ARIA-nominated Melbourne Ska Orchestra.

Supporting performer Tyus Arndt is a Thursday Islander, and starred in the popular Qantas ad. He has performed in the USA with the Gondwana Choir, and at the Sydney Opera House. He's rarely seen without his ukelele.

Plus, special guest appearance by multi-award winning, innovative, enigmatic poet David 'Ghostboy' Stavanger, as part of the Poetry Gallery (open from 2pm).

February events on the Gold Coast

Tuesday, February 04, 2014

Well the first month of the year flew by and we are well on our way into February! As well as being home to Valentine's Day, February will see a couple of exciting events take place on our beautiful Gold Coast.

As always, we would love to hear from you on ideas for posts, feedback or testimonials on your stay with us. Thank you again for your continued support.

Volvik RACV Ladies Masters (Golf)

The Volvik RACV Ladies Masters was introduced to the Australian golfing calendar in 1990 and enjoyed instant success when the US Open Champion Jane Geddes won back to back titles at Palm Meadows Resort. In 1992 the Ladies Masters moved to its permanent home the RACV Royal Pines Resort.

Tourism and Events Queensland's on going commitment along with co-title sponsor's Volvik and the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) has enabled the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters to gain the support of profile players annually. Co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour and Australian Ladies Professional Golf the Ladies Masters is truly an international event with some 25 countries represented annually.

The event is promoted by TA Golf with an on going commitment from J Golf (Korea) and television partner ABC1.

The Sisters of Swing are back on the Gold Coast next February for the 25th Anniversary event.
